Generation Y, the Millennials- who are we? We are the twenty somethings, the people born after 1980, the dreamers, the idealists. We are the people that want to change the rules and we are okay with failure. We have the reputation of being self-involved and having some unachievable idealism for ourselves and the world. The truth is, that the people who are claiming that we are such things are not Millennials and of course their opinions would be different. However, certain studies would have to disagree with them.
What are the characteristics of a Gen Y? According to the US Chamber of Congress Foundation, these are the traits of Generation Y:
1. The most diverse generation in history
We are more tolerant of races and groups. 45% of us agree with preferential treatment to improve the position of minorities and 11% of us are born to at least one immigrant parent.
2. We are the generation that has rewired the human brain to be an extraordinary multitasking tool.
According to brain studies, multitasking is a myth. However, some studies would suggest that Millennials have rewired their brains to increase the speed of information that the brain can process.
3. The Generation of Personal Branding
Some call us selfish and others would say that we are branding geniuses.
4. The generation that graduated High School
Generation Y has the highest rate of high school completion that America has seen in over two decades.
5. Potentially, the most educated generation in history
Millennials could be the most educated generation in history.
6. We want a work-life balance and we don't care if you think we are just being lazy
Gen Xers tried to achieve work-life balance, but Millenials demand it.
We are Generation Y and we have big ideas, big dreams, high expectations and we have all of the technology we need to achieve our ambitions. We are Generation Y and we will not take your word for an answer, we will always ask questions and expect more. It's just who we are.
